Biography

He was raised in Pretoria


Youth

Training

Studied drama at Stellenbosch University, completing a master's degree in drama on adaptations of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

While at University he took a playwriting course and began writing and directing his own plays.

Career

Since 2011 he has directed a number of plays professionally, including N is vir Neurose (written by Olwagen), Woza Andries [1] (written by Robert Volker, reworked by Olwagen and cast in rehearsal), Vagina Dentata (improvised by the cast) and Ubu en die Secrecy Bill (written by Olwagen). He co-wrote the screenplay (with Martelize Kolver) and directed the short film Toevlug.

Awards, etc

He was the 2008 winner of the Fleur du Cap Award for most promising student.

Nominated for the Rosalie van der Gucht Prize for New Directors 2011 for Woza Andries.

He was the recipient of the prestigious Young Artist Award and directed A Doll's House at the National Arts Festival, 2015, in that capacity.

Toevlug was the winner of the best screenplay, best director and best short film at the KykNet Silwerskermfees in 2013.
