CETSHWAYO, Chief. (circa 1826-1884) Zulu king who succeeded his father Mpande in 1872. Defeated the British at Isandhlwana but captured at Ulundi in 1879. Held in exile for 3 years by the British at Oude Molen in Cape Town. In this time he was invited to attend Disney Roebuck's presentation of the pantomime The Fair One with the Golden Locks in the Theatre Royal in 1882. Apparently he greatly enjoyed this and a huge crowd came to see the Zulu king. Later restored to the throne as king of a part of Zululand. A play based on his life was written by H.I.E. Dhlomo (??**)(See: De Beer, 1995, Fletcher, 1994)
