Cheaper Than Roses

by Ismael Mohamed. A play about the dilemma in the South Africa of "coloured" people who had sought to "try for white" under apartheid and the position of gay men in the white Afrikaner hinterland.

First published in Kathy A. Perkins (ed) Black South African Women: An Anthology of Plays by Routledge in 1998.

Performance history in South Africa

The play was apparently originally written in 1994 for the actress Lizz Meiring, but due to work commitments, she could not perform it at that time.

1995 Produced at the Grahamstown Festival with Gabi Murray, directed by Ismael Mohammed.

1996: Produced at the Grahamstown Festival with Nicole Krowitz, directed by Karen De Abreu.

2014: Produced at the Suidooster Arts Festival, the US Woordfees and the Baxter Theatre by the Kosie House of Theatre, directed by Zane Meas with Lizz Meiring. Music created by Coenie de Villiers with set and lighting design by Kosie Smit.
