Charles Johnman (1913 – 1978). Actor, director and lecturer in English at the University of Stellenbosch.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 19** he directed [?*] a (disastrous) production of The Dark is Light Enough in the Old Conservatoire of Music in Stellenbosch with students and staff. In spite of the failure Johnman and the cast asked Betty Freund to establish a proper theatre group in the old wine cellar at Libertas. This became the Libertas Theatre Club of which Johnman was an influential founder and director, and chairman until 1976. He ***
