In 1944, she and Mary Tilley founded Children's Theatre Incorporated in Johannesburg. Evans had a firm belief in the magic of the theatre and thus supported the use of professional actors and directors, and elaborate stage settings and sophisticated stage machinery for children's theatre.

The Children's Theatre registered as a company in 1945.
