Catherine Howard

Catherine Howard is a French drama in five acts and eight tableaux by Alexandre Dumas, père (1802-1870)[1].

The original text

A play about Catharine Howard, Queen and consort of Henry VIII, King of England. First performed in Paris at the Théâtre de la Parte Saint-Martin on 2 June, 1834, and published by Charpentier, Paris, 1834

Translations and adaptations

Translated and adapted into English as a three-act historical play called Catherine Howard, or The Throne, the Tomb and the Scaffold by William E. Suter (1811?-1882)[2]. First performed in English at the Surrey Theatre, London in 1858, and the only available published version appears to be no 55 of De Witt's Acting Plays, published in 1870 by Robert M. de Witt in New York, the author being given as William D. Suter.

Suter's play sometimes also referred to simply as Catherine Howard .

Performance history in South Africa

1863: Performed as Catherine Howard, or The Throne, the Tomb and the Scaffold in the Garrison Theatre, Cape Town by the 11th Regiment on 22 and 29 January, with Catching a Mermaid (Coyne).

1863: Performed as Catherine Howard, or The Throne, the Tomb and the Scaffold in the Garrison Theatre, Cape Town by the 11th Regiment on 3 May, with The Irish Tutor (Butler).

1875: Performed as Catherine Howard in the Bijou Theatre, Cape Town, by Disney Roebuck and company on 13 and 15 March, with The Pilgrim of Love (Byron).

1875: Performed as Catherine Howard in the Bijou Theatre, Cape Town, by Disney Roebuck and company on 21 June, with The Boots at the Swan (Selby).

1875: Performed as Catherine Howard in the Bijou Theatre, Cape Town, by Disney Roebuck and company on 18 August, with Miss Eily O'Connor (Byron).

1877: Performed as Catherine Howard in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, by Disney Roebuck and company on 17 November, with The Maniac Lover (Wilks).
