Carousel [1] is a musical play by Rodgers and Hammerstein based on Ferenc Molnar’s Liliom as adapted by Benjamin F. Glaser. Music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

The original text

The first production was on Broadway on April 19, 1945.

Performance history in South Africa

Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society in 1967 and 2002.

Presented by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society directed and choreographed by Jennifer Craig, musical director Joseph Manca, set designed by Keith Anderson. Costumes designed by Jennifer Craig, lighting devised by Jackie Richter.

The Johannesburg Operatic and Dramatic Society production directed by Ella Gerber at the Civic Theatre, Johannesburg, in June-July 1968.

Johann van Heerden was co-director, with Dominic Missimi, of the professional production that opened in Chicago and then moved to New York City in 1985.
