In Julie 1959 stig Attie Labuschagne en ander sendelinge* Mema as ’n kerk-aksie in Malawi. Die doel was om radio-uitsendings en die gebruik van ander elektroniese hulpmiddels vir evangelisasie*-doeleindes in te span. Die naam Mema kom van ’n Chewa-woord wat “uitnooi” beteken. By die stig­tingsbyeenkoms op Lilongwe demonstreer Robert Schmidt*, teologiese student, ’n meganiese vinger-grammofoon (fonograaf) wat hy ontwerp het om klankopnames van grammofoonplate sonder krag of batterye te speel. Tydens die 1959-Sendingweek op Stellenbosch vertel Schmidt van die moontlikhede van klankopnames vir evangelisasiedoeleindes. Twee weke later word Mema (SA) op Stellenbosch gestig. Die volgende jaar is dit verskuif na Bloemfontein, by die Sending­pers. Mettertyd sluit Schmidt voltyds by die span aan en Willie Olwage word orga­niseerder. Die klem van die werk verskuif geleidelik na die gebruik van videoprogramme en klankkassette.

Willie Alheit vervaardig onder meer Afspraak in die Kalahari, Vrou uit die nag, Ridder van die grootpad en Irma in die 1970’s. In 1979 word ’n belang­rike besluit geneem: Carfo word die film­afdeling van Mema. Al Carfo se rolprente en toerusting word na Mema in Bloemfontein verskuif en in die Sending­persgebou gehuisves. Etlike rolprente word in die 1980’s vervaardig en versprei – ook in Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho en Tswana.

In 1985 word Mema deel van die Chris­telike Lektuurfonds (CLF)* se bediening onder die bestuur van Eddie Botha in Bloemfontein. Peet Neethling word in 1986 deur die Mema-kommissie beroep om die produksie-werksaamhede van Mema te behartig. In 1989 verskuif Mema se hoof­kantoor na Pretoria en word dit ook ’n produksiehuis vir talle Christelike televisieprogramme.

In 1992 volg ’n verdere ommekeer. Daar word besluit dat Mema, wat finansieel noustrop getrek het, deel moet word van Bybelkor*. Mema verskuif na Wellington en vorm saam met Bybelkor Bybel-Media* met Mema-Media as onderafdelingnaam.

In 2015 is Mema-Media op Wellington deel van die NG Kerk se totale hergestruktureerde me­dia­groep.

Carfo, or the Christelike Afrikaanse Rolprent Fotografiese Organisasie (i.e. "Christian Afrikaans Film Photographic Organisation") was a film production and distribution company active in the 1950s and 1960s.

Origins and history

In 1939 a group of Afrikaners organised themselves in what was known as the Volksrolprentbond (approx. "people's film league") with the aim of combatting the English and Hollywood dominance in film production. This later disbanded and then reappeared in 1940 as the Reddingsdaadbond-Amateurrolprentorganisasie or Raro (approx. the ), with the support of the Reddingsdaadbond.

Eventually, however, it was a group of Afrikaans clergymen from the Dutch Reformed Church, and a few former members of the defunct Raro, who founded the Christelike Afrikaanse Rolprent en Fotografiese Organisasie (Carfo) in 1947.

Carfo was registered as a non-profit company in September 1947, with Rudolf Raath as managing director.

Contribution to South African theatre, film, media and performance

Over the period of its existence Carfo made fourteen feature films, many filmed versions of literary works, and a number of shorter educational and documentary films. Like the films made by Raro, their work was founded on Christian principles and displayed what one author (Wheeler, 1988) typifies as "a Christian local realist tendency" in its themes, form and style.
