Based on ''The Hidden Hand (or Capitola the Madcap)'', a popular serial novel by E.D.E.N. Southworth (first published in the New York Ledger in 1859) -  according to Habegger (1981) probably one of the best selling American-authored books of the 19th century. Hazlewood's dramatization was first performed at the City of London Theatre in 1860 published in London by T.H. Lacy, as No 104 in the series of ''Acting Editions of Plays''.

1867: Performed in the [[Theatre Royal]], Cape Town on 28 May by the [[Le Roy's Original Company]] company, with ''[[Poor Pillicoddy]]'' (Morton). The evening was offered as a benefit for [[Le Roy]] and the cast was augmented by Miss [[J. Caldazo]] of the [[Bailey-Poussard Company]].
