Cape Town Choral Society was originally founded in 1858 by J.H. Ashley, a music teacher,

The society is also referred to as the CT Choral Society at times, and according to F.C.L. Bosman (1980), the company had two phases, the first under Ashley (from 1858 till the end of the 1873) and a later one resuscitated under Mr Bucke in 1872 (1874?).

The society put on many musical evenings, which on occasion included dramatized oratorios, cantatas, and other works, and on occasion worked with theatrical managers such as Disney Roebuck.
