Biography

Themba worked for Drum magazine and the Golden City Post before moving to Manzini in Swaziland, where he died.

A collection of his stories, The World of Can Themba, edited by Essop Patel, was published in 1985.


Can Themba and South African theatre

His story Baby, Come Duze was adapted for the stage as a musical by Mothobi Mutloatse and Corney Mabaso and staged in The Warehouse at the Market Theatre in 1990.

His story The Suit was adapted for the stage by Mothobi Mutloatse and staged at the Market Theatre and Grahamstown Festival in 1994 in 1993-1994, co-dramatized and directed by Barney Simon.

In 2002 a dance version of The Suit was developed and performed at the Baxter Theatre by ** as part of the *** Dance Indaba.
