Lieutenant C. H. Newbatt was an officer in the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot which was sent to the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony (now the Eastern Province, South Africa) between 1860 and 1862 during the Frontier War. The regiment was based in Grahamstown and Keiskama Hoek.

Contribution to South African Theatre

Lieutenant C. H. Newbatt was a member of the Dramatic Club, in the section known as the Officers of the Regiment, and acted in two productions during his stay on the Eastern Frontier.

October 8, 1860: Acted in the Officers of the Regiment's first performance of Sheridan's five-act comedy, The Rivals. (Fag).

August 30, September 11 & 19, 1862: Acted in the adaptation to the stage from Mrs Moodie’s beautiful tale in a three-act drama by members of the Dramatic Club, 2nd Battalion 10th Regiment and presented for the first time, The Royal Quixote. (Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburgh)
