As a student at the Grey University College in Bloemfontein, was a member of the ** He acted in D.F. Malherbe's play Meester, alongside Abraham Fischer and Malherbe himself.
He later became professor of Afrikaans and Rector (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) of the University of the Orange Free State.
