Taking place in spring each year and usually running for almost the full month of September, the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival covers all seven regions of the City of Joburg – with the Newtown Precinct forming the heart of the month-long event.

Inaugurated in 1993, the 2009 edition of the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival drew close to 70 000 people, through a programme that covered music, dance, theatre, poetry/spoken word, visual art, comedy, film, as well as exhibitions and workshops.  These genres are the focus of each year’s extensive programme which is also enhanced through partnerships with other festivals (among them ‘Shared History: The Indian Experience in South Africa’), educational institutions, non-profit organisations, cultural groups and many more.

Each year organisers also work to bring Joburg’s residents and visitors to the city a festival that blends grassroots events with high-profile ones, delivering something for everyone living, working, or visiting Johannesburg.

From 2009 to 2010, the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival is produced and managed for the City of Joburg by Zanusi Brand Solutions. This leading 100 % Black owned Branding Consulting Firm took over the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival in 2009 bringing Zanusi's award-winning integrated brand solutions approach to the project with significant success.
