Applause - the musical

Applause is a musical play by Betty Comden, Adolph Green (book), Charles Strouse (music), Lee Adams (lyrics). Adapted from the classic 1950 Bette Davis filmAll About Eve, and tells the story of the great Broadway star Margo Channing and her duplicitous understudy, Eve Harrington. The original Broadway production starred Lauren Bacall and opened at the Palace Theatre on March 30, 1970, playing a total of 896 performances and winning five Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.

Performance history in South Africa

1971: Produced in South Africa by JODS in 1971, starring Janis Paige and Gay Lambert, at the Civic. Anthony Farmer designed the set, Otto Pirchner directed, and choreography was taken over from Geoffrey Sutherland by Wendy de la Harpe after dissatisfaction from the director.

1981: It formed part of the opening production of the Pretoria State Theatre in 1981. Devised and directed by Anthony Farmer.
