Anthea Thompson (19**-). Actress.

Biography

She was born in Cape Town.

Training

Trained at the University of Cape Town Drama Department. Received her Performer's Diploma in drama at UCT in 1991. She continued her studies in London.

Career

After a brief stint overseas, she founded The Normal Company with actor Stephen Raymond.

Tutored part-time at the UCT Drama School in 1995.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Her first production was Love's Labour's Lost for CAPAB at Maynardville, 1991. First caught the eye as "Maria" in CAPAB's Almost the Sound of Music and then went on to become a prominent lead actress in Cape Town. Guess who's coming to dinner 1993, Roles include Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1995), Martha in Elizabeth (1996), Cabaret (1995), Into the Woods (1997) and The Shakespeare Revue (1997),How I Learned to Drive, Much Ado about Nothing (Maynardville, 2005),

She played in Mamma Medea at various festivals in 2002 and 2003.

She performed in Rafiek Mammon’s one-woman piece Seashells (2012, directed by Fred Abrahamse).

From A Midsummer Night's Dream programme notes wherein she played Hermia: After a brief stint overseas, she founded The Normal Company with actor Stephen Raymond and they wrote, produced and toured several plays around the county, including The Normals and After Dinner Mints (Eauver the Top, 1992). Also been involved with children's theatre. She did Neurotica and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner for CAPAB in 1993. In 1994 she performed in Mud in Your Eye, Mac in the Long Street Theatre and Victoria would Like It at Eauver the Top.

Other productions include Onder die Brug, African Star! - The Will Schreiner Story, Green Man Flashing, Die Jogger, Mooi Maria, Murg, Broken Glass, Crimes of the Heart, Kingdom of Earth, Pick Ups, The Shadrack Affair.

In 2010 she appeared in the stand-up comedy show Cracks in the City at the Baxter Theatre.

Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Fleur du Cap Award, Best Supporting Actress, 1995), Martha in Elizabeth (Fleur du Cap Award, Best Supporting Actress, 1996), Cabaret (Fleur du Cap Award, Best Contribution to a Musical or Revue, 1995), Into the Woods (1997) and The Shakespeare Revue (1997) - winning a Fleur du Cap Award for Best Contribution to a Musical for both productions,

Nominated Seashells, Broken Glass, Die Jogger (best supporting actress, Vita Award 1997)).
