Amateur Teater or Amateurteater is the contemporary Afrikaans term for Amateur Theatre.

The concept of theatre by Amateurs was initially referred to as Liefhebbery Tooneel in Dutch, adapted to Liefhebbery Toneel or Liefhebberytoneel in Cape-Dutch and Afrikaans (see F.C.L. Bosman, 1928), before the word amateur was taken on in the terms Amateur Toneel and ultimately, approximately in the 1970s, the term toneel was replaced by teater in Amateur Teater.
