Born Sophia Albertina Miller, the daughter of James Edmund Miller and Anna Johanna (Dolly) Miller. However is professionally known as "Alta".

Met André P. Brink when she worked on his play Kinkels in die Kabel (an Afrikaans adaptation of A Comedy of Errors) for PACT's premiere production of 1970. They married married on July 17, 1970 and have two children, Danie Brink and Sonja Kershaw (Brink). They later divorced.
