Alexander McCall Smith (1948- ) [1] is a Southern Rhodesia-born fiction writer, best known as the creator of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency [2] series of novels set in Southern Africa. He also wrote a chamber opera, The Okavango Macbeth.
