An NGO based in Cape Town, that harnesses South African expertise, infrastructure, markets and resources to contribute to a vibrant and sustainable African creative sector that contributes to development, human rights and democracy on the continent, and projects African aesthetics and intellectual content into the global arena. It works in close partnership with Arterial Network, a continent-wide alliance of artists, NGOs and companies engaged in the African creative sector. It was launched in February 2009 with a two-year grant from Spier (a South African wine and leisure company) to establish an entity that would work in the creative sector across the continent and house the secretariat of the Arterial Network, a continent-wide body dedicated to advancing the African creative sector. AFAI is a non-profit organisation. The original board members were Harry Garuba (Chair), Amrish Bissoon, Mike van Graan (Executive Director), Zeona Jacobs, Chris Kabwato, Mulenga Kapwepwe, Lupwishi Mbuyamba and Christi van der Westhuizen.
