Adriaan Francken

Adriaan Francken (1860-1949) is an Afrikaans academic and playwright. Also known as A. Francken.

Born in Wydewormer, the Netherlands, he arrived in Bloemfontein on 21 April 1891 to become a professor in Dutch and French. He would later also teach English and German, and in addition be appointed the first lecturer in the History Department, founded in 1905. He eventually became the librarian of the College.

He was a founding member of the Onze Taal movement,

As playwright he is best known for Susanna Reyniers (1908)
