A Snake in the Garden is a full-length play by Norman Coombes.

The original text

The author and play received a number of awards, including : the Amstel Playwright of the Year Award, 1987, the Fleur du Cap Award for Best New Indigenous Script (1988), AA Life Vita Best Script Award (Cape) (1989) and the Olive Schreiner Prize for Drama in 1990.

A photocopy of the playscript is held by NELM [Collection: DALRO]: 2001. 41. 43 and [Collection: COOMBES, Norman]: 2008. 11. 1. 10. 1.

Performance history in South Africa

1988: First performed by the CAPAB English company, directed by Christopher Weare at the Nico Arena from 10 to 25 June 1988, with Anne Curteis and Norman Coombes in the leading roles. Designs by Birrie le Roux, lighting by Skip Wright. The same production opened at the National Arts Festival on 6 July 1988.
