A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is a play by Peter Nichols ()[]


Written in 1967, the play centres on a British couple who are struggling to save their marriage whilst trying to raise their only child, a small girl with cerebral palsy.

First staged at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland, before transferring to London's West End theatres in 1968.

Performance history in South Africa

1972: Directed by Robert Davies at the Little Theatre, Cape Town, for the UCT Dramatic Society starring Colin Duell, Sue Phillips.

1973: Directed by Roy Sargeant, presented by the Rhodes University Drama Department with Henry Goodman, Lois Butlin, Mary Ashby, Tony Peake, Irene Peake and Beth Dickerson in the cast.

1980: Performed by The Company at the Market Theatre in May, directed by Roy Sargeant with a cast that included Danny Keogh, Sandy Dacombe, Bess Finney, Lesley Nott, Nathalie Codd, Ron Smerczak and Tiffany Kelly (as "Joe").
