A.W. Cole (18*-18*) was an advocate and later judge in Cape Town, and an amateur performer and playwright.

Also known by his pseudonym Cresswell.

Biography

A.W. Cole, Q.C., became a Judge of the High Court of Griqualand West and Judge President High Court in Cape Town.

He wrote an autobiography entitled Reminiscences of My Life and of the Cape Bench and Bar (Cape Town: J.C. Juta and Co. 1896).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He apparently performed for the Royal Alfred Dramatic Club under the pseudonym Cresswell Esq. in 1860-61 (also found as Cresswell and Cresswill in Bosman, 1980: pp. 154-157).

He wrote two known pieces, Idylls of a Prince and The Plagued Professor (an original interlude, the characters based on members of the Royal Alfred Club, announced under his pseudonym).
