A.A. Balkema Publishers is a publishing house in Cape Town.

Also referred to as A.A. Balkema, Balkema Publishers, or simply Balkema.

The publishing house

Founded by the Dutch and South African bookseller August Aimé Balkema (1906-1996)[1] in 1946.

Besides historical and academic publications, it was also a publisher of innovative and controversial literary works, including play texts, such as Guy Butler's, including The Dam (1953), Cape Charade (1968) and Take Root or Die (1970); Athol Fugard's The Coat and Don Maclennan's and The Third Degree (in one volume, subtitled "Two Experiments in Improvisation", 1971),
