(1862-1946) British architect who came to South Africa in 1892 when commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes to restore Groote Schuur. Had an enormous influence on the style of South African architecture, his designs including the Union Buildings, the Rhodes Memorial, South Africa House in London and numerous churches, public and private buildings in the country. Among them are a number also used for performance, including St George's Cathedral, Cape Town.
