The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is an agency mandated by the South African Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC)to support and promote the film and television industry in South Africa.

The Foundation

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is an agency mandated by the South African Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to provide funding for the development, production, marketing, and distribution of films – including helping filmmakers represent and market their work internationally. In addition, the NFVF commissions research and produces industry statistics that provide both the public and stakeholders with valuable insights into the South African film industry.

It also promotes the development of South African film and television audiences, develops talent and skills in the country – with a special emphasis on previously disadvantaged groups.

The SAFTA Awards

In 2005 representatives of the South African film and television industry, guided by the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF), established the annual South African Film and Television Awards, known as the SAFTAs. The Awards honour, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of South African Film and Television talent and productions, and serve to encourage entrepreneurship and the development of new talent within the industry.
