Literator is a South African academic journal

The journal publishes research articles and essays on linguistics and literature in general, but focuses in particular on the (comparative) study of South African languages and literatures and other cultural phenomena across language, media and cultural boundaries. Includes articles on theatre, film and media.

The first issue was published in April 1980 as a bulletin of the language departments at the then Potchefstroom University for CHE and in 1985 the Literator Society was founded and the bulletin changed into an independent journal for linguistics and comparative linguistics and literary studies.

The journal was accredited by the South African Department of Education as a recognized research publication in 1988.
