The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer [1] is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan. It opened on 17 November 1877 at the Opera Comique in London, where it ran for 178 performances.

The original text

The plot of The Sorcerer is based on a Christmas story, An Elixir of Love, that Gilbert wrote for The Graphic magazine in 1876.

Performance history in South Africa

1969: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Billie Jones, in the Labia Theatre.

1978: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Helen Houghton, in the Claremont Town Hall.

1990: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Helen Houghton, in the Baxter Theatre.
