The Tripartite Alliance is a reference to the alliance of the ANC with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), created in 1990 after the unbanning of liberation movements by the apartheid government. The alliance participated in the negotions and has ruled South Africa since 1994. Each Alliance partner is an independent organisation with its own constitution, membership and programmes. The ANC contested the elections as a political party and holds a majority in the South African parliament, while the SACP and COSATU have not contested any democratic election in South Africa.
