It is based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for the 1957 Italian film Le notti di Cabiria (English: Nights of Cabiria).

NAPAC staged Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide and Sweet Charity, collectively marked as The Trilogy directed by Harold Prince, with Angela Lansbury [2] in the cast at The Drama, Natal Playhouse, Durban, from 7 July - 20 August 1989.
Staged by the Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society in 2003.
