Nozincwadi Books and Story Festival
The Nozincwadi Books and Story Festival is a project aimed at promoting literacy and reading, first begun and run by actress and storyteller Gcina Mhlophe in 2001, under the auspices of her foundation, the Gcinamasiko Arts and Heritage Trust. Since its inception in 2001 Nozincwadi The festival has travelled to the most remote areas of the country, particulkarly in Kwazulu-Natal.
The aims and objectives are to instil the pleasure of reading in people; to revive the art of storytelling and encourage and promote its role in modern society; to endorse the work of South African and African authors; and ultimately to encourage young people to start creating their own stories and their own books, so they can have a say in the future of writing and reading in the country.
A primary thrust of the project is the distribution of books within communities that otherwise would have no access to reading materials.
