(1945-) Influential and controversial literary theorist and historian, short story writer and novelist, with a strong interest in Afrikaans drama. After years as a teacher at Grey College Bloemfontein and a lecturer in Afrikaans at the University of the Orange Free State, he joined the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) as head of the Centre for South African Literature Research (CENSAL). Besides books on novelist Etienne Leroux, many essays on prose and drama, he edited very useful volumes of essays on playwrights Gerhard Beukes (19**) and Bartho Smit (19**) and co-edited an introduction to literary and dramatic theory with *** (19**). His relevant reports on literary and cultural issues at the HSRC include ***. In the 1990’s he became a Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria and devoted himself to writing.
