Krugersdorp Municipal Theatrical and Orchestral Society

Name of the Krugersdorp Municipal Dramatic and Operatic Society (KMDOS) from 1948, after the incorporation of the West-Rand Symphony Orchestra. The first conductor of the new society was Anton Hartman. At the same time the society received a plot of land and a grant from the municipality for the construction of its own small theatre, but the project was never realised. They did a few plays, including Kleurskema (Anton de Waal, 1948), None but the Bold (Corbett, 1948). However, in 1952, P.P.B. Breytenbach, who had been the chairman since 1934, left to become the director of the NTO, and eventually KMTOS split into two separate organisations along language lines. The Krugersdorpse Afrikaanse Toneel Organisasie (KATO) was established in 1954, and in 1956 the English faction of the KMTOS followed suit by establishing the Krugersdorp Amateur Dramatic Society (KADS).
