An annual festival of new writing begun in 2008 as a national project of PANSA (the Performing Arts Network of South Africa). Undertaken with the support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), its aims are to generate original South African theatre works, to provide a platform for these works to reach the attention of theatre producers, and to work towards full-scale productions of the winning plays.

In the first phase regional staged play readings of selected texts are done in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, making use of trained actors under the guidance of a professional director, and judged. The winning scripts in each region are then re-read in a national final and judged and critically adjudicated by a panel of specialists from the profession.
