Construction

Built in 1968 with a donation from the Anglo American Corporation/the Harry Oppenheimer Trust(?*), it was designed as an all-purpose theatre to serve either resident or touring companies presenting opera, ballet music or drama in the mining town of Welkom. Forming part of the Welkom Civic Centre Complex, it has a seating capacity of 750, divided into both stalls and gallery. The proscenium opening and orchestra pit are expandable, with an extremely large stage. There are dressingrooms for 80 people.

Management

The theatre was managed by PACOFS from 19**-19**. In early 70s amateur theatre also flourished at this venue, under the inspired leadership of Lucille Gilwald at this venue.

Productions

First official performance was Die Bedelaarstudent (An Afrikaans translation of Der Bettelstudent - "The Beggar Student" - by Carl Millöcker, 1882) on Thursday February 15 I968. [AW]
