Basutoland
Former name of Lesotho. It was a British Crown colony established in 1884, entirely surrounded by South Africa. Now an independent country called Kingdom of Lesotho, having gained its independence from the United Kingdom on October 4, 1966. Entirely surrounded by South Africa, through sharing language and cultural ties, it has always had a symbiotic economic and cultural relationship with the RSA.
