Founding

The Department and ministry was created under Nelson Mandela as part of the new ANC led government in 1994. The ministers were Ben Ngubane (1994-1997) and Oswald Mtshali (1998-1999)

Splitting of the Department

On 1 August 2002 the Department of Arts, Culture, Science & Technology (DACST)was divided into separate Departments:

The Department of Arts & Culture (www.dac.gov.za)

The Department of Science & Technology (www.dst.gov.za)
