H. Lane Bayliff

(b.**/**/1872, Kensington, London – d. **/**/1937, Katoomba, New South Wales). British stage actor. Between 1895 and 1913, Henry William Lane Bayliff toured the provinces in a wide variety of plays, from popular entertainments to works like Lady Windermere’s Fan and Julius Caesar. Between 1911 and 1918 he was also very active as a producer, notably at the Liverpool Playhouse. According to passenger lists, he first visited South Africa in 1902 and again in 1920, but in 1923 he acted in The Reef of Stars, the Joseph Albrecht version of the novel by H. De Vere Stacpoole, playing Captain Lant. He later settled in Australia, where he resumed his theatrical career, acting in a number of productions at the Atheneum Theatre in Melbourne (1926-27). In 1934 he was the adjudicator of the Australian Women’s Weekly Screen Personality contest and between 1933 and 1937 he appeared in at least five films, including three directed by Ken G. Hall. (FO)
