A cinema which also doubled as a venue for plays and performances. For example, Gracie Fields performed there in 1935. ****


The Criterion, Durban

Corner of Field Street and Esplanade, Durban. Built as a Bio-vaudeville (see Music Hall in Part Three, Section 1), the Criterion opened 20/5/1912. Popular Durban venue, used by such South African companies as the Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies/Marda Vanne Company, Munro-Inglis Company, Brian Brooke Company and visiting companies such as the Old Vic. Demolished 1953.
