June Hern

HERN, June. (19*-) South African actress. * Starred in imported musicals such as Annie Get Your Gun, which was staged by ACT in 1949, and Brigadoon, also staged by ACT in 1950. Starred in Taubie Kushlick’s 1956 Christmans show, Listen to the Wind, together with Elizabeth Meyer, Brian Proudfoot, Joyce Grant, Maureen Adair and Philip Birkinshaw, with sets by Pamela Lewis and staged at the Library Theatre. She starred in Sandy Wilson’s The Boy Friend which was staged at the Brooke Theatre in May 1957. Also starring Shirley Hepburn, Ivan Berold, Maureen Adair and Bruce Anderson with sets and costumes by Pamela Lewis and Heather MacDonald-Rouse, and piano played by Gertrude Walsh, who also conducted. She played the part of Cecily in Half in Earnest, a musical version of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. It was Kushlick-Gluckman’s first production, staged in April 1959, and directed by Leon Gluckman. It also starred Taubie Kushlick, Olive King, Gordon Mulholland and Michael McGovern. She starred in the revue What Was, Was! by Gertie Awerbuch and Miriam Lopert. It also starred Charles Stodel and Michael Fisher and was staged at the Jewish Guild and the Alexander Theatre in 1965. She starred in the JODS production of South Pacific which was staged at the Civic Theatre by Brickhill-Burke in 1969. There were designs by Keith Anderson and it alos starred Inia te Wiata, Jean Dell and James White. She starred in the Brickhill-Burke production of Jerry Herman’s musical Hello Dolly! together with Joan Brickhill, Mike Huff, Iain Henderson, Andrea Catzel, Victor Melleney and Charles Stodel. It was directed by Louis Burke and staged at His Majesty's Theatre in 1980. ** (Tucker, 1997)
