Michael Chapman

CHAPMAN, Michael. (1945-) Academic, author and editor of many publications on South African literature, who has done much to legitimize and extend the study of Southern African literature as a legitimate and popular discipline. Born in ***, he studied at ***, finishing his post-graduate work at UNISA. Lectured in the Dept of English at UNISA and later University of Natal, becoming Dean of Arts. His any book publications include ***** A Century of South African Poetry (Donker, 197*), ****. Perhaps the most ambitious endeavour, which netted him much of both praise and censure, is An Introduction to Southern African Literature (Donker, 199*) in which he seeks to chronicle all literatures in all the South African languages and in all forms. Won the Sanlam Literary Award in 1987. (See: De Beer, 1995)
