FONTAINE, Joan. (1917-) Hollywood film actress. Born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland in Tokyo, the younger sister of actress Olivia de Havilland. made her stage debut in the West Coast production of Call It A Day in 1935 and was soon signed to an RKO contract. Won an Oscar for Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941). Continued her stage career as well. Played in the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in 1966 in ***?? She was brought out in 1972 to star in Pieter Toerien’s production of Dial M for Murder, opposite John Gregson, but was not a success and left acrimoniously after the run had finished.
