Founded the Vuyani Dance Theatre Company in 1999.
He was choreographer for The Suitcase for the opening of the Soweto Theatre (2012).
He created Genesis: The Beginning and End of Time (2026).

Maqoma won FNB VITA Dance Umbrella Pick of the Fringe Choreography Ward for Here, There and Where in 1995 and the FNB VITA Dance Umbrella Stepping Stones Choreography Award for Heaven and Earth in 1996. He won FNB VITA Young Choreographers Grant and created Layers of Time in 1997. Maqoma won 2001 Vita Award for Most Outstanding Male Dancer and Best Choreographer, and the Young Artist Award (Dance, 2002).
