DOWDESWELL, Christopher [1] (1944-2011) was a British-born musical director and conductor. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He came to South Africa in 1981 to take up an appointment as Resident Conductor at the Nico Malan Theatre Centre where he conducted a wide range of operas, concerts, ballets, musicals and oratorios. In 2003 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Free State Symphony Orchestra.
