Union Bioscope Company
The Union Bioscope Company was an early cinema company.
The company
Set up by a printer, a plumber, and a chemist to exploit the advent of the bioscope in South Africa, the Union Bioscope Company opened their first cinema in Human Street in Krugersdorp. It was a wood and iron building called the Lyric Theatre, but was later demolished and replaced by the Vaudette Theatre. The company thereafter used the name Vaudette Theatre for a number of cinemas in various towns/cities, including Johannesburg (in 1909), Kimberly and East London.
