He was a lecturer in English at the University of Stellenbosch,
In 1957 he was forced to resign as lecturer at the University "because his method of teaching English to Afrikaans-speaking students was 'not conducive to the best interests of the University' " - apparemntly he used Comprehension tests consisting of "provocative" passages containing religious and political opinions most likely to stimulate fluent discussion and critical scrutiny".[1]
