La Vittima is an Italian play by Mario Fratti (1927-)[1].

Widely known by its English title of The Victim.

Not to be confused with the 1922 Italian film by Jacques Creusy[2] or the 1947 English novel by Saul Bellow[3]

The original text

A man, who claims to be the gas man, intrudes while a beautiful woman is talking to her lover on the phone. He is the perpetrator of a recent murder on her front doorstep, yet she finds herself intrigued by him. So a contest of wills develops, one intensified when her husband arrives as well. It is only at the very end that one realizes who the real victim was.

Published in Italian by Lo Faro in 1972, and widely performed in various languages.
