D.J. Winterbach is a geologist and editor, novelist and playwright.

Though he is sometimes referred to as Dirk Winterbach in sources, he is not to be confused with the poet and sculptor Dirk Winterbach.

Biography

He studied geology at the University of the Free State and worked in the mining industry for a number of years before joining the Council of Geoscience in 1972, where he later became adjunct Director and editor of publications.

His interest in literature led to an Honours degree in Afrikaans-Nederlands and his gradual interest in creative writing. He published poems in Tydskrif vir Letterkunde and similar publications, as well as a play and novels (his fiorst being Die Begunstigde in 2010).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He wrote the play, Die Uitklaring ("the security clearing"), first performed at the ATKV Kampustoneel festival in 1992.
