An expensive club and house of entertainment in Cape Town, founded in 1803 and used for musical concerts (inter alia by the Germans). Subscription was extremely high. Regular professional concerts were held there. The house also had two billiard tables, a whist-club and other ‘games of skill and chance’ – only for men??* It was later also used as a box-office by the British Amateurs for their productions. (See: Fletcher, 1994)
